How-To 7
Your Workspace II: Docs, Sheets, Forms, Sites, Gmail

In our previous How-To, we set up your Side Hustle Master Folder to ensure your files are stored securely. To build on that foundation, we will now learn how to use your Chrome browser as a multitasking workbench. In this session, we’ll fill your digital workbench with the free digital tools you need to test your side hustle idea. You’ll learn the five core Google applications we use to run the entire system. We’ll also go through the steps to create your first test files and make sure they are stored in your Side Hustle master folder. By the end of this How-To, you’ll get an idea of how to use one toolset to manage everything. From writing text and publishing a website to tracking customers.

The Power of Integrated Tools for Seniors

Your life experience, practical knowledge, and vision are 60% of the project. Pairing this with digital tools, you can build something highly effective. However, the modern internet is filled with thousands of different software programs. Many companies offer apps for writing, building websites, sending emails, etc.

But you do not need a complicated, expensive setup to test if an idea is viable. You only need a clean, structured place to work. An integrated software system, like Google’s free digital tools, makes things easier. It cuts down most of the hassle of switching between programs. All your files and data are in one place and talk to each other naturally. This keeps your digital setup simple. You can focus your energy on your side hustle idea, not on managing complex tech. But before you can use such a powerful Side Hustle system, you have to build it.

Escaping Multi-Software Confusion

Let us look at a genuine struggle many people face when starting a digital project. Trying to learn five separate, disconnected software tools causes immediate overwhelm. Getting apps from different suppliers to work together adds extra complexity. You keep copying and pasting data or need to learn extra workflows. This causes errors and leads to frustration.

Yes, I know. AI can create a complete Side Hustle system for you. But if you do not have the basic knowledge, insights, and skills used in the Helping Hustle How-Tos, you are not prepared to use AI for that. As you will see later on, AI will only do smart things for you if you can create smart prompts.

Many beginners believe you need to be a “Tech Wizard” to make an online impact with sophisticated apps. This is a misconception. You can chase 20 fancy apps if you want. But building a local side hustle system in one free, integrated toolkit is the safest way to keep your momentum. We avoid risking your money on an unproven idea. We use free digital tools to prevent technical freeze-ups and keep operations running. We avoid stress and overwhelm.

Deploying Your Five Free Digital Tools

To test your idea safely in real life, you will use this simple, integrated set of free Google tools. Let us define the five pillars you will use for your side hustle system:

  • Google Docs
A word processor. You will use this to write your blog posts, draft your flyers, and structure your ideas.
  • Google Sheets
A spreadsheet tool. You can use it for calculations and to make lists of possible customers or participants.
  • Google Forms
A tool to publish an online form that automatically adds names and email addresses to your list.
  • Google Sites
A tool to create a website that serves as the forefront of your side hustle. This is your digital storefront.
  • Gmail
A tool to send and receive emails with potential customers.

Consider the “Grow Strawberries Indoors” example. You will use your AI Hired Hand to write Google Doc copy and adjust it by hand. You will use Sites to display that copy. You will use Forms to let people place an order. That Order Form will automatically send the order to your customer list in a Sheet. Finally, you will use Gmail to send them an educational series and keep in touch. This is what these free digital tools can do.

Building Confidence Through Interface Familiarity

The true beauty of this Google toolkit is that the tools look and behave similarly. Once you learn how to make text bold in Google Docs, you already know how to make text bold in Google Sites. The buttons are in the same places.

This predictability takes you from feeling anxious about tech to being a confident Side Hustle Builder. You are firmly in charge of your digital workspace. You are the director who guides the AI Hired Hand and the five tools. You notice that if you master one interface, you’re close to mastering all five tools in this toolkit.

When you open Gmail, you need to understand how to read the Gmail window. Here we cover the basics. We will practice Email later on.

  1. To start Gmail you need to open a new Tab. Click the + on top of the Chrome window, the one with the tooltip New Tab.
  2. Click on Gmail. You can find Gmail in the upper right, next to the Waffle.
  3. Notice you are in the Gmail window now. If you move the MousePointer over the rows, 4 Gmail icons pop up on the right side of every row.
  4. Using the images below you can identify the following parts:
    • Bold text indicates an email that has not been read yet.
    • Sender Name: Found on the left, indicating who sent the email.
    • Subject: Found in the middle, displaying the ‘title’ of the email.
    • Archive Icon: Moves the email out of sight without deleting it (it remains findable via Search).
    • Delete Icon: Throws the email into the ‘Bin’ for 30 days before permanent deletion.
    • Read/Unread Icon: Use this icon to toggle between Read and Unread. It makes the Sender and Subject Bold or Normal.
    • Snooze Icon: Makes the email disappear and ‘pop back up’ at a chosen future time.
  5. Click Compose and send an email to yourself.
  6. Close Chrome.
